Biography

Johannes van Alen was a son of Adam Van Alen and Catryntje Van Alstyne. He was baptized in Kinderhook, New York, on 28 February 1736. Witnesses were Jacobus and Catharina van Alen.^[1]

About 1754, he married his second cousin, Maria Van Alen (baptized in Albany July 3, 1737, a daughter of Jacobus Van Alen & Helena Van Alstyne). She died about 1766.^[2]

On 26 November 1767, he married his second wife, Catharina Clapper, in the New York Dutch Church (MDC:227). She was a daughter of Cornelis Clapper and Catharina Gravenraet.^[2]

He was a merchant in Claverack Landing (now Hudson), New York, where he died Dec. 15, 1784.^[2]

John Van Alen of Claverack Landing made his Nov. 25, 1782. It was probated Dec. 21, 1784, In the will he mentioned his wife Catharina, his two children by her, and his other children Adam, Elbertje, and Tryntje. His widow Catharina was sole executrix. The witnesses were Jacob F. Van Hoesen of Claverack, yeoman ; Justus H. Van Hoesen, merchant; and James Barker,Esq., of Coxsackie (FW: No. 1917).^[2]
